  • From carpenter to a hobbyist painter

    Berthold Kohr

From 1940 to 1960 Berthold grew up in his family home in Trier-Pfalzel. The parents ran a carpentry in the Pfalzeler Strasse. Here he went to primary school and later he attended the comprehensive school in order to be able to begin an apprenticeship as carpenter.

A good understanding of artistic and pragmatic thinking, drawing skills and creative imagination facilitated the training to master the school. His goal was to detach from the parental furniture carpentry as quickly as possible. He immediately established his own business in the countryside ...

  • Style of painting

His painting style has different directions today and can be described as very broad. He finds himself in almost each of the diverse styles of Fine Arts at home, and he has peaked into almost each of the innumerable artistic epoch. But his preference definitely remains the creative oil painting.

Especially two absolutely contradictory opposing styles are fascinating him:

    Expressionism

A style in the visual arts of the early 20th Century that places more value on the expression of facts as the appearance.

    Impressionism

A style which sees the actual representation of the object, the landscape, the person in front.

  • Business?

Initially he started painting pictures with the intention to beautify the inside of his home. His wife often suggested to seek the sale of his pictures. Not also because slowly a lack of space was noticeable. But selling was never at forefront of the artist. Then gradually guests or friends asked to purchase one or the other picture of him. This quickly developed further into the Ponzi scheme.

Today potential buyers can discuss color wishes, size and motive of the picture. Berthold then can guide you to the possible implementations of the painting. This approach mixed with the own desire of the painter leads to interesting, beautiful images with a very open and variable art style.

He visualizes his pictures clear and clean in front of him. Most of the times he does not need to sketch. He creates his works without templates and brings the image to a desired final format without the need of tools and calculations. He remembers interesting motives out of his mind and paints them later in his studio on canvas. But ideas and concepts are always welcome! Art enthusiasts are always welcome to bring ideas and discussions.

  • From carpenter to a hobbyist painter
    Part II

... of Trier. There he constructed a new hall for his own carpentry, specializing in coffin manufacturing.

There he also took back the artistic talent and the ability for the individual design of the pious coffins. During this time there was little time for painting. Crayons and paper promoted him though as a child to paint, but later Berthold discovered oil colors.

He has a frequent restlessness which compels him to activity. This benefits to his creative potential. Painting is his passion and helps him to keep his head clear.

Towards strangers he is introverted and sometimes even shy. Crowds and big cities are not preferred. He is definitely a family man. Married since 1968, has two children and three grandchildren, who are already introduced into color theory by him.
